A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Kathmandu University School of Engineering (KUSOE) and Network for Quality , Productivity and Competitiveness –Nepal (NQPCN) to work in cooperation in the hosting of the 16th Asia Pacific Quality Organization (APQO) International Conference on Quality to be held in Kathmandu, Nepal from 18-20 September 2010 in Kathmandu University. The MOU was signed by Prof.Dr. Bhola Thapa Dean of School of Engineering at Kathmandu University, and Mr. Bishnu Dass Dangol, President of Network for Quality, Productivity and Competitiveness-Nepal on 17 January 2010. The theme of the Conference will be “Creating Value through Quality”. About 200 foreign delegates and 300 Nepali participants are expected to participate in the conference. Renowned International and National Experts on Quality will be presenting theme paper and best practices during the three days of Conference on Quality.

Dr. Kayastha also invited to the Expert Meeting on “State of Tropospheric Temperature, Pollution, Snow, Melting Glaciers and Potential Impact on Monsoon and High Altitude Vegetation in the Himalayas-Tibetan Plateau” 28-29 December 2009, Teri University, New Delhi, India. The workshop was sponsored by the UNEP and conducted by the Institute of Green Economy in collaboration with Teri University and Sharada University, India. Dr. Kayastha gave a talk on the “Changing Climate over Nepalese Himalayas and Impact on Glaciers.”
The workshop participants are of the opinion that the IPCC conclusion that the Himalayan glaciers could melt by 2035 is not based on scientific studies. The participants, however, wanted to emphasize that this does not, in any way, reduce the need for mitigation of, and adaptation to, climate change that has been initiated by the international community.

Mr. Uttam Budhathoki attended a Training Program in Gas Chromatography and Gas chromatography Mass spectroscopy (GC and GC-MS) in Department of Chemistry, Dhaka University, Bangladesh from 09-15 December 2009.
International Foundation for Science (IFS), Sweden, supported him to attend the training as he is an IFS grantee.

University of New Mexico Delegates visit Kathmandu University
Memorandum of Understanding is signed between Kathmandu University (KU) and University of New Mexico (UNM) to begin formal relationship between two universities. Four-member delegates headed by Dr. Suzanne Ortega (Executive Vice president and Provost),along with Dr. Phillip Gonzales, Sr. Associate Dean, Arts and Sciences, Professor, Dr. Alok K. Bohara, Professor, Department of Economics and Dr. Kristin Vanderbilt, Associate Research Professor, Sevilleta Long-term research, Department of Biology, UNM were the team members. The objectives of the MoU included exchange of teaching and research personnel, exchange of students, development of joint research projects, organization of joint academic and scientific activities such as academic and professional courses, conferences, seminars, symposia and lectures etc.
The delegation had series of discussions with the deans and faculties to explore various subject areas where both the universities can go hand in hand from December 1-December 3 in different meetings in KUSOM building, Dhulikhel Hospital and Central Office Kathmandu University. On December 3, 2009, after the signing of the academic agreement, there was formal inauguration of KU UNM Nepal Study Center in Kathmandu University at KUSOM. The center was opened with the objective to run and facilitate joint activities and research projects on Nepal.
The delegation also visited and met officials of ICIMOD, NTNC and FoB and discussed the possibilities of various activities along with KU.
The delegation of Kathmandu University comprising Prof. Suresh Raj Sharma, Vice Chancellor, and Prof Subas KC, Dean of School of Management had visited UNM in April 2008.

Forum for Civil Engineering Education in Universities of Developing Countries
On friendly invitation of College of Civil Engineering of Hunan University, the Dean of School of Engineering, Prof. Dr. Bhola Thapa and the Head of Department of Civil Engineering, Prof. Dr. Ramesh Kumar Maskey participated in a 20-day visit cum training program organized by Hunan University in Chnagsha of Hunan Province of People's Republic of China from 10 to 30 September 2009. Seventeen Participants from six-developing countries namely: Kenya, South Africa, Egypt, Vietnam, Pakistan and Nepal. The visit was sponsored by the Ministry of Education.
The main objective of the Forum was to provide opportunity to scholars from Asia and Africa to use it as a platform for sharing knowledge and building network between them for mutual growth in the context of Global knowledge–based economy. There were eleven lectures by professors from Hunan University, one special presentation by participants and one plenary discussion on "Opportunities in International Collaboration and Interaction in Education and Research in Civil Engineering" Furthermore, the visit was supplemented by four technical visits to different design institutions, heavy industries, construction sites related to civil engineering. Participants also have appreciated the visits to different historical and tourist sites in Hunan Province and Beijing including the Great China Wall.
As an outcome of the Forum, a Memorandum of Understanding for educational and cultural cooperation between Suez Canal University, Egypt and Kathmandu University has been signed by the authorities of respective universities. Similarly, an Expression of Interest document for mutual cooperation in educational and cultural exchange has been signed by authorities of participating countries. Further, a meeting was held between the delegates from Kathmandu University and representative of Hunan Allonward Hydro-Generating Equipment Co. Ltd on 24-25 September in Changsha of Hunan Province to discuss on various aspects of mutual cooperation (see Minutes of Meeting)
Kathmandu University extends its warm thanks to College of Civil Engineering of Hunan University for the friendly invitation and the opportunity to exchange knowledge and experience with distinguished participants from Asia and Africa. Mr. Krishna Prasad Shrethsa (Graduate Student and Teaching Assistant at Department of Mechanical Engineering) and Mr. Vijit Atreya (Graduate Student and Teaching Assistant at Department of Computer Science and Engineering) have attended Invitation Programme for Science and Technological Human Resources under the Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youth (JENESYS) Programme 2009 in Japan from Nov 1 – 14, 2009. During the courtesy call on Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan, on 2nd Nov, 2009, Mr. Krishna Prasad Shrestha delivered special speech on the behalf of all the participating nations from SAARC. During the program, 4 participants have represented Nepal. The rest two participants (Mr. Kaji Ram Karki and Mr. Soyuz Gautam) were from Tribhuvan University.
The objective of the programme was to establish network among Japanese and SAARC Science and Technological human resources and also to establish network within the Science and Technological human resources from SAARC nations. The participating nations were Bangladesh (3 participants), India (6 participants), Nepal (4 participants), Pakistan (3 participants) and Sri Lanka (3 participants). During the program, the participants visited various cities, institutions and industries of Japan. The cities they have visited are Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe. The institutions they have visited are Nagoya Institute of Technology, Kyoto Institute of Technology and Kobe University. They have also visited Yamazaki Mazak Corporation, Panasonic Center at Osaka, Sumitomo Metal Industries – Kashima Steel Works and Yamanaka Engineering Company at Tokyo. The participants have also visited Asian Disaster Reduction Center, Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institute and various historic and cultural sites of Japan. According to the participants from Kathmandu University, Nepal, the program remained successful in fulfilling its objectives. Kathmandu University thanks Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan and Japan International Cooperation Center (JICE) and all the facilitators of this program.

Mr. Khagendra Acharya, Lecturer at the Department of Languages and Mass Communication, attended an International Workshop on Media Strategies for Social Change held in Haifa, Israel from 19-30 October.
Mr. Acharya who was selected a group leader of the team that comprised Jo from China, Luis from El Salvador,Grace from Nigeria and Rosan from Philipines, presented a power point presentation on the title Global Crisis: Who Suffers?

The Disaster Management and Sustainable Development Center (DMSDC) of Kathmandu University is renamed to the Himalayan Cryosphere, Climate and Disaster Research Center (HiCCDRC) in October 2009. The HiCCDRC is under the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering (DESE), School of Science (SOS) in Kathmandu University (KU), Dhulikhel, Nepal.
The main objective of the center is to carry out research on cryospheric science and climate change related issues and produce young researchers in these fields.
The specific objectives of the center include:
· Research on snow, glacier, glacial lakes, hydrology, disaster, energy, biodiversity, climate change and related issues- in house, collaborative and cliental
· Trainings- in house and outside cliental in the above mentioned topics
· Course offerings – M. Sc. by research, M. Phil. and Ph. D. in Glaciology
· Provide services to university in the related expertise
· Organize relevant workshop/seminar/conferences
· Develops national/international linkage and collaborations

Dr. Deepak Prasad Subedi participated and presented a research paper in the International Conference on Physics Education (ICPE 2009), held in Bangkok, Thailand, during Oct. 18-24 2009. The title of his presentation was Contact angle measurement and its importance in surface characterization. In the mean time, he also attended the meeting of the national point of contact of the Asian Physics Education Network (ASPEN) held in the same venue.

Renewable Nepal Kickoff Workshop was held in Kathmandu University, Dhulikhel on October 27, 2009. The ‘Renewable Nepal’ project aims to stimulate industrial application research in renewable energy technologies at Nepalese Universities, by financially supporting industry institution partnership researches. The project is funded by NORAD and is jointly managed by Kathmandu University, Nepal and SINTEF Energiforsking AS (SEFAS) Norway. Under the project framework, a number of selected industry institution partnership research projects will be supported financially upto 80% of the total project costs.
