Press Release - School of Law

Australian Ambassador &The Asia Foundation Representative visit Kathmandu University School of Law at Dhulikhel

October 18, 2017

Australian Ambassador to Nepal, HE Peter Budd visited Kathmandu University School of Law (KUSL) at Dhulikhel today. He was accompanied by The Asia Foundation’s Country Representative Dr. George Varughese.

The purpose of the visit was to be introduced to KUSL’s project on Subnational Economic Governance and Law, which is being implemented with the assistance of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade through The Asia Foundation.

The project enables the School of Law to conduct legal research and dialogue on the development of local economic laws and policies, establish an economic law clinic, and publish newsletters on related themes in support of subnational economic governance.

The visiting dignitaries were received at KUSL by Kathmandu University Vice Chancellor Dr Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha, KUSL Dean Dr Bipin Adhikari, and other senior faculty.

The School of Law is the seventh and latest School at Kathmandu University. It was established in 2014 to tap the great opportunity abundant in Nepal for a high quality law school, which can maintain an educational programme that prepares its students for admission to the bar, and effective as well as responsible participation in the legal profession.

The first undergraduate programme that the School has offered thus far is an integrated five year Bachelor of Business Management & Bachelor of Law (BBM, LL.B) course. This programme will help create a new generation of bright young lawyers who will be trained in law and management, so as to cater to the requirements of the business and corporate sector in Nepal, one which has long struggled with the paucity of trained lawyers who have some understanding of business management and organizational practices, and can bring fresh energy, commitment, leadership and creativity into finding solutions to complex legal problems.

The School has recently also started Masters by Research Programme in Energy and Infrastructure Law.

As a School committed to research in the areas of trade, investment, energy & infrastructure, intellectual property and corporate law, the project support of the Australian Embassy and The Asia Foundation is important for the School in its mission to be relevant to the development and institutionalization of the economic law regime at the grassroots, especially in the context of federalism.

Apart from the officials, the visiting dignitaries also interacted with the faculties and senior students of the School of Law.
