Sustaining Cultural Heritage through Digital Preservation


Department of Computer Science and Engineering is organizing a talk program on “Sustaining Cultural Heritage through Digital Preservation”. The speaker is Mr. Sujan Shrestha, Assistant Professor, Division of Science, Information Arts and Technologies, University of Baltimore.

The schedule of the program is as follows:

This program is open to all faculties/ staff/ students of Kathmandu University.


(Synopsis of Talk)

The limitless scope of modern science and digital technology today makes it an ideal choice for many tasks in the area of digital preservation and conservation. Much of the cultural content in recent history is created and documented through scanning and modeling while traditionally it was documented through drawings, manuscripts and photo imaging. Like any medium, this process of documentation has impacted the representation of history and time through interpretation and cultural awareness. Although, the use of virtual reality in archaeology and art history seems like a tangible path, constructing and digitally preserving cultural heritage is a challenging task. Methods of preservation, cost and metadata and archiving techniques need careful analysis for historical accuracy. Virtual reality provides an ideal platform to synthesize these accuracies and transform these techniques into reliable information/technology that has the potential to unleash new innovation and discoveries. It brings an array of possibilities in the area of digital preservation of historical artifacts using Virtual Reality environments that have been designed through studies of human interaction of technologies. The presentation will explore an alternative technique of finding innovative and creative solutions in converting and sustaining cultural heritage sites and cultural artifacts into a digital virtual space


Dr. Bista and Mr. Shakya Publish a Research Paper

Dr. Rabindra Bista, Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (DOCSE), and Mr. Anmol Shakya, a graduate student at DOCSE, got a paper published in Advanced Computing and Communication Technologies. 

This paper is based on a research carried out by Mr. Shakya under Dr. Bista’s supervision. The work proposes a new method and claims of it being more efficient than the existing approaches in enhancing the life-time of Wireless Sensor Networks. The same is published as “Randomized Distance Based Clustering Algorithm for Energy Efficient Wireless Sensor Networks.”

Potential candidates will require completing an application form available from June 15, 2016   on payment of Rs. 500 from Kathmandu University Central Office, Dhulikhel (Tel # 011 66 13 99/ 011 66 15 11) from 10 AM to 3 PM on working days. Application form can also be downloaded from KU webpage.   The completed application form must be submitted along with necessary documents not later than July 5 2016 to KU Central Office, Dhulikhel, Kavre.  The shortlisted candidate must make a payment of Rs 1500 as test and interview fee for Assistant Professor at the time of collecting admit card.

Documents required: Attested copies of mark sheets of all academic qualifications/ transcripts, citizenship certificate, work and professional experience certificates (both existing and previous), training certificates, and a list of research publications.  Two recent PP size photographs should be attached.

DESE Organized a One-Day Workshop on ODF

Department of Environmental Science and Engineering (DESE), School of Science, organized a one-day International Workshop on " Open Defecation Free (ODF) Campaign and Septic Tanks Construction in Nepal: What Next?".

The workshop was divided into three sessions, an Opening, Technical and Panel Discussion session. The Opening session was chaired by Prof. Dr. Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha, Vice Chancellor, Kathmandu University. Hon'ble State Minister Manju Kumari Chaudhary, Ministry of Urban Development and Chief Guest of the program inaugurated the workshop. Prof. Dr. Mohan Bikram Gewali, (Dean, School of Science, KU), Er. Sunil Kumar Das (Deputy Director General, Department of Water Supply & Sewerage), Er. Shambhu KC (Joint Secretary, Ministry of Urban Development), Er. Ganesh Shah (Former Minister of Environment, Science and Technology) gave their opening remarks. Prof. Dr. Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha concluded the Opening session with his closing remarks. Chief Guest highlighted the role of the university as a bridge to knowledge and in developing a pool of professionals. Prof. Dr. Shrestha emphasized on the importance of environmental protection and WASH.

During the two Technical sessions, five distinguished professionals and academicians working in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Sectors (WASH), Er. Sunil Kumar Das, Prof. Emeritus Euiso Choi (Innovative Water Center, Cambodia), Dr. Thammarat Koottatep (Associate Professor, AIT Thailand), Er. Hari Prasad Sharma (Water and wastewater Specialist and Deputy Team Leader, DOHWA Consultancy, South Korea) and Ms. Nadira A. Khawaja (WASH Sector Leader, SNV-Nepal) presented their respective papers.      

Technical session was followed by a Panel Discussion session entitled “Toilet waste management in emerging cities and towns”, which was moderated by Mr. Bhushan Tuladhar from UN-HABITAT. The panelist of the session were: Er. Sunil Kumar Das (DWSS), Er. Kishor Kumar Shakya (Chairman, High Powered Committee for Integrated Development of Bagmati Civilization), Ms. Sarita Shrestha Maskey (Joint Secretary, Ministry of Urban Development), Dr. Thammarat Koottatep, Prof. Euiso Choi, Ms. Nadira A. Khawaja, Er. Hari Prasad Sharma.

More than 100 professionals, policy makers, academicians, researchers and students working in WASH sectors participated in the workshop. Dr. Kundan Shrestha, Assistant Professor and Coordinator Environmental Engineering, DESE, KU concluded the program with his closing remarks.

KUBIC Workshop on Entrepreneurship and Incubation

Kathmandu University Business Incubation Center (KUBIC) organized a 3-Day Workshop on Entrepreneurship and Incubation during 1- 3 June, 2016 at C.V. Raman Mini Auditorium. The workshop was supported by the University Grants Commission.  

The program was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Bhupendra Bimal Chhetri, Dean, School of Engineering. The program was moderated by Ms. Supriya Koirala, Asst. Manager, Business Incubation Center. Fifty participants, mainly staff/faculties from Science, Engineering, Management, and Graduate students of KU attended the workshop.

The first day of the program was more about importance of Entrepreneurship and Incubation where Ms. Supriya Koirala, Asst. Prof. Mr. Rupesh Krishna Shrestha (KUSOM), Mr. Shashi Bhattarai (Member, Steering Committee, KUBIC) presented on KUBIC development, Lean Startup and History of Incubation in Nepal.

The second day of the program was on Business Development Process for startups. Mr. Arun Sharma (Visiting Faculty, KU), Mr. Brijesh Sharma (Senior Engineer, Nepal Telecom), Asst. Prof. Mr. Rojan Baniya (KUSOM) and Mr. Deepesh Vaidya (Managing Director, Kriti Capital) presented on Entrepreneurship: Opportunity Recognition, Business Model Canvas, Marketing and Finances for Small Business.

The third day of the program was on Technology transfer, Intellectual Property Right and Mentoring process which were facilitated by Ms. Rebecca Ordish (Visiting Faculty, KUSL) and Prof. Binod Krishna Shrestha (KUSOM). Panel Discussion was organized at the end of each session. Feedback and suggestion was collected from all participants for future programs.


Certificate of participation was distributed to all participants and token of love for speakers and organizing team in the closing session by Prof. Dr. Bhupendra Bimal Chhetri, Dean, School of Engineering, Kathmandu University. Asst. Prof. Mr. Manoj Shakya expressed his vote of thanks to participants, speakers, faculties and organizing team.
