One-Day Seminar on Plasma Physics

A one-day seminar on plasma physics was organized on 27th of December 2015 to mark 10th year of the establishment of Plasma Physics Laboratory at the Department of Natural Sciences, School of Science, Kathmandu University (KU),Dhulikhel. The main objective of the program was to review the progress made in teaching and research in plasma physics in the past 10 years and set-up goals for the future.

M. Phil. in Mathematics (Part Time) for the academic year 2016

Academic Program: M. Phil. by Course

Minimum Duration: 2½ years

Eligibility Criteria : A master degree in mathematics with a minimum of 16 years of schooling and having a minimum of 50% marks or CGPA 2.5 on the scale of 4 from the recognized universities.

Application form for the program can be obtained from the Department of Natural Sciences, Kathmandu University or can be downloaded from link. The department will evaluate the completed application form and selection will be made based on interview.

Application form should be correctly filled in. The form should be submitted to the department of Natural Sciences, Kathmandu University, Dhulikhel, with a non-refundable payment of Rs. 1250/-

Last date for form submission: February 15, 2016.

Admission Open

Kathmandu University announces the opening of admission to the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science Program for February 2016 intake.

Candidates with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate and 50% in Physics Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) or Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science (PMCs) in 10+2 or equivalent examinations are eligible to apply.

Candidates are required to take Computer-based Entrance Exam in PCM.

Instructions to the Applicants:

  1. Register your name for Computer-based Test (CBT) and fill up the online application form.

    • Candidates are required to register online before visiting the admissions office for admission cards.

    • CBT registration form and application form will be available online at http://apply.ku.edu.np/cs from December 25, 2015 to January 13, 2015.

    • A valid email id is required for registration.Confirmation link and confirmation code will be sent by email. Be sure to click on the confirmation link and enter the confirmation code.

    • Use the login credentials provided during CBT registration to log into the online application system.

    • Fill up the personal and academic information.

    • Partially completed forms can be saved and edited later, however, you will not be able to make any changes once the form is submitted.

    • Be sure to submit the completed online application form before the deadline.

  1. Pay the required CBT and admission application processing fee of Rs.1,250 to any one of the following KU accounts at any branch of the banks mentioned below. Note that late applicants are required to pay double fee of Rs. 2,500.

  1. Obtain an admission card for the entrance exam.

    • Visit admissions office located at Block 08, KU main campus, Dhulikhel on January 12 or 13, 2016 between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM with your photo identification document (citizenship card, passport etc.), a photocopy of the identification document, 3 recent PP-size photographs and a bank voucher of Rs.1,250. Admission card can be obtained with double fee of Rs. 2,500 on January 15, 2016 between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM.

    • Make an appointment for CBT and collect admission card.

  1. Appear on Computer Based Entrance Exam.

    • Appear at the examination hall at least 15 minutes before the commencement of the examination.

    • Do not forget to bring your admit card and identification document along with you.

    • Wrist watches and simple scientific calculators are allowed. Be sure to erase any formula or data written on the cover of your calculator or in its internal memory before bringing it to the exam.

    • Other electronic items and written materials are not permitted inside the examination hall.

    • Failing to comply with above guidelines may disqualify you from the admission process.

  • Syllabi for entrance exam are available at http://apply.ku.edu.np/syllabi

  • Apply early to avoid rush close to the deadline.

  • Candidates with scores below 528 in the entrance exam are considered ineligible for admission.
  • Candidates who have passed all courses of Grade 11, have appeared in exams of Grade 12 and are awaiting the results can also apply on a provisional basis.
  • KUCAT 2015 candidates who have scored 528 or more in PCM may also submit Expression of Interest (EoI) for admission. EoI should be submitted to either Dean’s Office of School of Science or Dean’s Office of School of Engineering on or before January 13, 2016.

  • A limited number of scholarships are available for meritorious and financially needy students. The application for financial support is to be submitted at the time of admission.


An online practice test will be available at: http://cbtdemo.ku.edu.np from December 25, 2015

The online practice test is intended to make the applicants familiar with the Computer Based Test (CBT) and has two parts with five questions each.

The number of questions, topics and difficulty level do not reflect the actual computer based entrance exam.

The actual computer based entrance exam:

  • has three parts: Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, with 120 questions in total. Each part has 40 multiple choice questions.

  • is of 2 hours.

  • is not available online.

  • is graded on the scale of 0 – 2220.

KUBIC Conducts One-Day Training on Business Model

Kathmandu University Business Incubation Center (KUBIC) organized a one-day training on Business Model Canvas in cooperation with Kings College, Center for Innovation, Kathmandu, Nepal. Mr. Nanda Kishor Mandal and Mr. Ceaser Rana from Kings College conducted the training on Preparation of Business Model Canvas, Preparation on Business Plan and Financial Model of Business.

This program was conducted as a part of MoA between Kings College and KUBIC signed on 25 September 2015.

 There were 35 participants representing KUBIC companies (Ficus Biotech, Intellectual Center, GS Fiber, Gala Innovation, Turbine Design Services Pvt. Ltd., Datalab, ITI Initiative, Pragma Studios, The Opinio ), KU faculties and students. The participants discussed their business proposition, prepared a Business Model Canvas for their venture and presented them in consultation with experts.

The training program was moderated by Ms. Supriya Koirala, KUBIC, and the closing remarks were presented by Mr. Manoj Shakya, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering.

DoCSE Students Win Prize in Ncell App Camp 2015

Team 'Pinpeaks', which comprised 5 students from Department of Computer Science and Engineering, has successfully won the Ncell App Camp 2015 under the category 'Tourism'. The competition, organized on December 22 by Ncell in partnership with Esewa, Nabil Bank, Met Life and KCM, witnessed a total of 728 ideas, among which 153 were submitted under the 'Tourism' category.

With team members Rohit Shrestha, Ritesh Jung Thapa, Sohil Lal Shrestha, Hilson Shrestha and Aatish Neupane, 'Pinpeaks' won the prize money of NRs. 2,50,000.

According to the team leader Rohit Shrestha, Pinpeaks, basically, is a simple android application which lets users identify, search and locate nearby mountains and hills of Nepal. He explained, "For a country full of high mountains and hills, trekkers will be highly benefitted with this app."

Officiating director of Nepal Tourism Board, Mr Sunil Sharma, was one of those impressed by the novelty of the application and its devotion towards tourism industry of Nepal.





Request to Save Power

All research laboratories and research centers  are informed of the Load Shedding Schedule on Main Campus as follows. University is trying to supply  electricity through Power Generator despite all difficulties even at the time of Load Shedding. All concerned are hereby requested not to use heavy equipment/instruments at the time when Power Generator is operating.

Hostels and Residence on Main Campus shall not receive electricity during this period.

KURC Wins First Prize

On December 19, 2015, two teams from Kathmandu University Robotics Club (KURC) participated in Yantra 4.0 Art. Tech and Science Festival 2015 all Nepal Robotics Competition jointly organized by Robotics Association of Nepal, Karkhana and Siddhartha Art Foundation at Rajdal Nepal Army Camp in Lalitpur.

The project group of Abhishek Bhatta (CE fourth year), Amit Gupta (CE fourth year), Dipak Khadka (ME third year) and Sanjeev Humagain (EE fourth year) secured first position under the category Yantra Automatic Akhada”. They defeated Advanced College of Engineering and Management on the tough final. Similarly, the team of Jiten Thapa, Saurav Poudel and Sharayan Khatiwada from EE second year participated in “Yantra Manual Akhada”. The amount of first prize was 50,000.00 NRs.

Prof. Dr. Ramesh Kumar Maskey visited the venue as the mentor of the Club.

The Office of the Dean of School of Engineering extends its warm congratulations to KURC for their success.

Call for expression of Interest for installation of 10 kW Solar power system

Kathmandu University School of Management is constructing new solar power system as secondary backup source of power of 10kW capacity. The construction will be done on roof top of KUSOM building located at BalkumariLalitpur.

In this regards, we would like to call expression of interest (EOI) from local companies for the design, installation and commission of solar power system with best available resources and technology.

Interested applicant should provide technical and financial details of the system along with EOI.

Technical proposal

  1. Designs should meet the minimum output detailed in technical specification.

  2. Proposals should outline all calculations, drawing and working which explain how their proposed design provides this output. This should justify the overall system design, and the selection of each component given the key design principles listed below.

  3. Detailed layout of PV installation and power management plan.
    • Installation work plan, timeline and management plan.
    • Operation and maintenance training requirements, schedule and plan, and any additional suggestions regarding the management of maintenance.

    • Last date of submission is 24 Dec 2015. 

    4. The proposals must state what the warranty period is for all components and what the operation and maintenance requirements are. Proposals should demonstrate that they have authorized service centres or repair centres for the technology they are providing.

M.Sc. Environment and Natural Resources



Eligibility: The general requirement for entry into the MSc ENR programme is 50% marks or CGPA of more than 2.0 with a 4-year undergraduate science degree in Environmental Science, Natural Resources, Agriculture, Forestry and allied subject areas. There is also a possibility to take one elective 3-credit course on Human Values and Personal Transformation as part of MSc program given by highly stem scholar from Bhutan and Nepal and is appreciated by students as transformative experiences to commit and care for better environment.

Deserving applicants shall receive scholarships available through the NORHED SUNREM-Himalaya Project. The last date to apply is Dec 30, 2015.


Special thesis topics to receive research funding support include:

  • Sustainable resource management in the changing climate context

  • Climate change adaptation and mitigation with reference to agriculture, water resources and urban environments.

  • MAPs and NTFPs as a means for livelihood security and climate change adaptation.

Second Program of Twenty-First Convocation Held

Kathmandu University held the second program of its 21st Convocation Ceremony on 15 December 2015 at the Main Campus, Dhulikhel.

Rt. Hon'ble Prime Minister Mr. KP Sharma Oli, Chancellor of Kathmandu University, chaired the Ceremony.  Mr. Madan Mani Dixit, prominent litterateur and scholar of eastern philosophy, was the Chief Guest of the Ceremony.

A total of 1243 graduates received degrees in the Ceremony including 203 from School of Arts, 72 from School of Education, 262 from School of Engineering, 469 from School of Management and 237 from School of Science.

KU Signs MoU with WWF

Kathmandu University (KU) and World Wildlife Fund Inc. (WWF) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 13 December 2015 at KU premises in Dhulikhel. The main objective of this MoU is to use the resources of both organizations efficiently and effectively to promote conservation education and research. Meanwhile the relationship is expected to exchange information on biodiversity conservation in Nepal and share related research publications.



The MoU was signed by Prof. Dr. Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha, Vice Chancellor in presence of Registrar Prof. Dr. Bhola Thapa, Dean and Associate Deans of School of Science and School of Engineering, Kathmandu University. The signatories from WWF were Mr. Anil Manandhar, Country Representative, and Dr. Ghana Shyam Gurung, Senior Conservation Program Director, in presence of other task force members from WWF.

The duration of MoU is five years which is extended from July 2015 to July 2020.
