Numerical Experiment Workshop on Plasma Focus

Dept. of Natural Sciences, KU, organized a workshop in numerical experiments on Plasma Focus during Sept 27-Oct 2, 2013. The workshop was a collaborative project of KU, Tribhuvan University (TU), Institute for Plasma Focus Studies (IPFS), Australia, INTI International University, Malaysia, and  Asian African Association for Plasma Training (AAAPT).

The main objective of the workshop was to train plasma physicists of Nepal.  

Prof. Sing Lee, director of IPFS and Prof. Saw Sor Heo, Pro vice- chancellor of INTI International University were the resource persons of the program. The program was inaugurated on 27 September by Prof. Lee by switching on a plasma lamp.

Prof. Dr. Panna Thapa, Dean of School of Science, and the Controller of Examinations, delivered a welcome speech. He emphasized the role of young scientists working in developing countries.  Prof. Lok Narayan Jha, Head of the Central Department of Physics, TU, highlighted the development of plasma physics study in Nepal.  Prof. Dr. Bhola Thapa, the Registrar of KU, Prof. Sanjaya Nath  Khanal, Director of Affiliation affairs, KU, and Mr. Mukunda Prashad Upadhyay, Chief Administrative Officer, KU, attended the inaugural program.

Forty two scholars from different institutions of Nepal participated in the workshop. The workshop was coordinated by Dr. Raju Khanal, Associate Professor of Physics at TU, and Dr. Deepak Prasad Subedi, Professor of Physics and Associate Dean at the School of Science, KU.

The workshop concluded on 2 October. In the closing program, Prof. Dr. Panna Thapa offered token of love to the resource persons and to Dr. Raju Khanal.  Prof. Dr. Thapa also distributed certificates to all the participants.

Prof. Dr. Subedi delivered vote of thanks to all the members of the organizing committee as well as to the staff and faculties of KU who had supported the workshop.

Demonstration of Go-Kart Test Drive

On 3rd October 2013, Surendra Dandekhya and Anup Bikram Bhuju, Mechanical Engineering final year students, successfully demonstrated the test drive of Go-Kart. Faculties and students from Department of Mechanical Engineering and other Departments observed the demonstration.

The Students designed and fabricated Go-Kart at Mechanical Workshop as their project work for the partial fulfillment of their undergraduate course. The project was supervised by Binaya K.C, Assistant Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

On the occasion, Dr. Bim Prasad Shrestha, Associate Dean (Research and other activities) of School of Engineering and Head of Department, successfully drove Go-Kart and congratulated students for their hard work.

Some faculties and students from Mechanical Engineering and other Departments also successfully drove Go-kart and appreciated the work.

Go-Kart is powered by 150 cc petrol engine which is transferred to the axle by means of chain drive. It has a disc brake at the rear wheel axle. It can accommodate only one person at a time.

The manufacture cost of Go-Kart is around NRs 45,000.

Shrasta Bhetghat in School of Arts

An interaction program was held in School of Arts, Hatiban, Lalitpur, on 23 September 2013, with poet and lyricist Bikram Subba and emerging singer Jhuma Limbu.

The program was a part of the Shrashta Bhetghat (meeting with creative personalities) series organized by the Department of Languages and Mass Communication.

Poet Subba and singer Limbu presented their respective creations at the beginning of the program.

The Associate Deans, faculties, staffs and students of the School attended the program.

CEP Program on Community Field Visit

The Community Education Project (CEP), KU, organized a program entitled "Sharing Experiences and Feedback of Community Field Visit, 2013," on September 30, 2013, in the CV Raman Auditorium.

Undergraduate second year students (CE/CS, EE and ME) presented their experiences of the community field visit. The presentations involved short introduction of the place of visit, problems tackled, contribution to the community, and experiences gained.

The program was attended by the Registrar, Associate Deans, Project Manager (CEP), faculties of School of Engineering and Mr. Tore Skeie (Nepal Director, Himal Partner).

Mr. Sushil Shrestha, a project member (CEP), briefly discussed different aspects of the field visit.

Prof. Dr. Ramesh Maskey, Associate Dean, SoE, highlighted some of the community-oriented works done by Kathmandu University in collaboration with Seoul National University, S. Korea, and encouraged students to contribute to the community further in the future. 

Mr. Tore Skeie made remarks about the students’ presentations and thanked CEP for organizing the visit.

Visit of Prof. Dr. Sergei Silvestrov

Professor Dr. Sergei Silvestrov, the coordinator of the Masters programme in Engineering Mathematics at Malardalen University, Sweden, visited KU during 28 – 29 September 2013.  On September 29, Prof. Sergei interacted with the faculties, visiting professors and research scholars of the University about the scope of the engineering mathematics programme and highlighted some possible collaborative activities in mathematics with common domains.



Prof. Sergei informed that the Masters programme of his university is highly job-oriented and popular in European countries for the production of competent engineers who are seeking higher education and research activities with strong mathematical foundations and updated applications. According to him, the programme also aims to fulfill the need of skills to develop the technology of tomorrow, with broad expertise in mathematical methods and applications, by transferring knowledge from universities to industries.



During the interaction programme, Prof. Dr. Bhadra Man Tuladhar, president of Nepal Mathematical Society (NMS), shed lights on academic programmes and some of the major mathematical activities in Nepal. Similarly, Dr. Deepak Subedi, Associate Dean of School of Science and Head of the Department of Natural Sciences, described the structure, academic programmes and research activities at the Department.  

Dr. Gyan Bahadur Thapa from Institute of Engineering, Tribhuvan University, was also present in the occasion.

The University Celebrates 22nd Annual Day

The University organized a special program on September 25 to mark its 22nd Annual Day. The program was held in the CV Raman Hall of the principal campus.

In his address, Prof. Dr. Ram Kantha Makaju Shrestha, the Vice Chancellor, recalled the glorious history of the University, especially the fact that on September 25, 1991, the first meeting of the country’s democratic parliament had passed a bill for the establishment of Kathmandu University.

The Vice Chancellor stressed that the clear mission and vision have so far ensured the University’s upward growth to become a leading higher academic institution in the country, and that the University must move ahead with the teaching cum research model for self-sustenance of each its programs. He reiterated KU’s commitment to quality education and emphasized the need for expanding research and academic programs through constituent and affiliated colleges across the country.

A group of faculties, staffs and students organized a cultural program to mark the occasion. They presented songs representing different periods, genres and themes. Nepali all-time hit numbers like Yo Karmabhumiko Anganma, Sarangiko Tarle Mero, Ma Mauntama Aljhiraheko, Mayaluko Chheuma Janda, Jahan Chhan Budhhaka Ankha, Phoollai Sodhen, Lolayeka Ti Thula¸Parelima Aai Basechha were some of the special performances of the graceful evening. The program was concluded with the group performance of John Lennon’s well-known number Imagine.

Prof. Dr. Ramesh Maskey, Mr. Prachanda Man Pradhan and Mr. Bibhu R. Tuladhar had special contribution in selection and arrangement of the songs. The program was hosted by Mr. Hem Raj Kafle.

Among the dignitaries to grace the occasion were Prof. Dr. Bhala Thapa, the Registrar, Prof. Dr. Suresh Raj Sharma, Founder Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Sitaram Adhikari, Founder Registrar, and Mr. Bel Prasad Shrestha, Member of the Board of Trustees. The Deans and Associate Deans, Directors, Heads and Coordinators, faculties and staffs of different Schools attended the program.
