Study and Simulation of Channel Modulation Process in GSM

GSM is the most popular standard for mobile phones in the world. Over 200 GSM networks are operational in 110 countries around the world. The channel modulation process adopted by GSM is GMSK. GMSK was chosen over other modulation schemes as a compromise between spectral efficiency and complexity of transmitter. GMSK provides a spectrally efficient modulation method for wireless data transmission. GMSK employs a premodulation filtering prior to modulation. Premodulation filtering is an efficient way of reducing the occupied spectrum for wireless data transmission. In addition to compact spectrum, wireless data modulation scheme must have a good BER performance under noisy conditions. GMSK is optimized as 0.3 GMSK for BER and spectral efficiency.

GMSK can be demonstrated by Matlab program and a detailed study can be made. This can help clear all the theoretical concepts and help in verifying and comparing the theoretical expectation via Matlab simulation.

The project entails the study of the GSM system, demonstration of the modulation process and the prior modulation processes from which it is derived, the verifications of various theoretical expectations and comparison of performance of GMSK with MSK and OQPSK. This is achieved through Matlab programming language and Text User Interface.
