Capacity Planning and Implementation for GSM Network

Wireless networks have penetrated almost a billion subscribers worldwide. Because of the voice voice oriented traffic and circuit-switching technology, these networks are dimensioned and designed using the traditional traffic theory in telecommunications. In wireless communication system, Telecommunication has paid important role for allocating the channel for different cell within given area effectively. This project is also part of the telecommunication engineering which deals with the effective channel allocation scheme. The effective channel allocation leads to increase in capacity of the cellular system.

There are different factors which determines the capacity of the cellular system like cluster size, traffic efficiency, bandwidth, sectoring, etc. But our project focuses mainly on efficient utilization of available channels. Efficient utilization of the scarce spectrum allocation for cellular communication is certainly one of the major challenges in cellular system design. This project deals with the maximization of the capacity of cellular network for the available channel, offered traffic and the allowed blocking probability. The concept of trunking allows a large number of subscribers to share relatively small number of available channel by providing access to each user. In a trunked-radio system. each user is allocated a channel on a per call basis, and on termination of call, the previously occupied channel is returned to the pool of available channels. For design of any cellular system, the traffic behavior of the system is important. Thus the project also deals with simulation of the traffic behavior of cellular system and thus blocking probability of the system is estimated.

The efficiency of any system depends on capacity to handle the significant amount of traffic provided that the resource is limited. The limited resources (frequency channel) in such system can be reused without interfering cells. The efficient utilization of the scarce channel for cellular system can be achieved by using different channel assignment schemes including fixed channel assignment, Dynamic Channel assignment and Hybrid Channel assignment strategy. And to determine the efficiency of these strategies, GOS of the system is calculated first and applying it to each of channel assignment strategy.

The simulations of our project are implemented using programming language MATLAB and (Graphics User Interface). The simulations also help us to determine the channel efficiency of these various channel assignment strategies.
