PLC Control of Over-Head Crane

Programmable Logic Controller is a microprocessor based controller designed for industrial control. In PLC, programming is implemented in a graphical programming language known as ladder diagram. Sensors and actuators are connected to PLC to sense the physical parameters and drive the system.

The control of Overhead Crane consists of four push buttons for the motion control (left, right, up, and down) and two push buttons for system control (start and stop). Start and stop push buttons are used to simply turn on or turn off the system. The left, right buttons are used for the horizontal movement and the up, down buttons are used for the vertical movements. Two motors are connected to the crane for the horizontal movement and the vertical movement. Limit switches are used so that when the crane moves as far as it can go; the PLC would sense the end of travel and automatically stop the motor avoiding possible damage to the system. An emergency stop button is also included in the system for emergency shutdown of the system.
