Overcurrent, Overvoltage and Undervoltage Protection of Isolated Alternator

The electric power system consists of various components like alternators, transformers, station bus-bars, transmission lines, mechanical support, etc. The most important thing to be considered is the protection of all those equipments installed in the system. The main objective of any power system is to provide uninterrupted power supply. For this, the system has to be protected from various faults that occur in any of the parts of the system and the functional parameters like current, voltage, etc are to be kept under proper balance.

This report aims at the protection scheme of an isolated alternator against over current, over voltage and under voltage faults. The protection can be done both using logic gates and operational amplifiers and by computer based control. There may be different faulty conditions like external fault, thermal loading, unbalanced loading, stator winding fault, overvoltage, etc that may affect the normal operation of the alternator. Protecting the alternator from these faults helps operation of alternator under balanced condition. Besides this, it helps the protection of alternator against possible damage of the device as well as from life hazards of the personnel working with that device.
