Study of Breakdown Characteristics of Air Insulation Under Different Voltage Profiles and Electrode Configuration

Our project is mainly concerned over the High voltage line. We have done different High voltage tests, on different voltage profiles i.e. AC, + DC, -DC and impulse voltages and under different electrode configuration i.e. needle-plane, needle-­needle and sphere-sphere, in the newly established High voltage lab at KU premises. We perform different experiments to test different characteristics of High voltage in air in different electrode configuration with various gaps. As an outcome of the project, we found that, dielectric strength of air insulation depends, not only in the breakdown voltages applied, but also in the geometry of the electrode configuration. The reason behind taking this project is to gain practical knowledge along with theoretical knowledge in the field of High voltage. In recent times, there is far more advancement in this field mainly due to need of more High voltage transmission line with the growing power demand.
