Study and Simulation of Traffic Behavior in Telecommunications Network

In the past decade, the wireless communications market has experienced tremendous growth, and this growth is likely to continue in the near future. In addition to an increase in the number of users, ever more demanding applications will appear, resulting in ever greater resource requirements. The limited radio frequency spectrum available can no longer support this increasing demand, and the required quality of service will no longer be attainable if an efficient solution is not found. Thus results in congestion in mobile network.

Cellular radio system accommodates a large number of users in a limited radio spectrum. The concept of trunking allows a large number of users to share the relatively small number of channels in a cell by providing access to each user, on demand, from a pool of available channels. In a trunk radio system, each user is allocated a channel on a per call basis, and upon termination of call, the previously occupied channel is immediately returned to the pool of available channels. The efficiency of any exchange depends upon capacity to handle the significant amount of traffic. Traffic in any system depends on the offered traffic, number of available channels, and number of users; call duration in given area to design a cellular system, traffic behavior on that system is important. By using Erlang formula or programming the probability of call failure in given system can be determined.

Erlang distribution used in teletraffic theory can be used to determine the blocking and delaying probability of a particular network provided the number of channels and total offered traffic to a particular network, the blocking and delaying probability can be easily determined. Thus the performance of network can be evaluated.

The project "Study and simulation of traffic behavior of Telecommunications network" entails the study showing the probability of success and failure of call through MATLAB programming language.
