Construction and Calibration of Anemometer

This project mainly deals with the measurement of wind speed. Today the use of wind energy is growing very fast and various researches are being conducted in the field of wind energy. For correctly measuring the wind speed we need an anemometer, which is an instrument capable of measuring the wind speed. Anemometer can be very useful in different application of wind turbine, wind tunnel and other aerodynamic testing where it is very important to determine the speed of the wind. The anemometer can be used to calculate the speed of wind at different altitudes, temperatures and various conditions.

As the wind hits the blades of the anemometer, due to the difference in pressure, the blades start to rotate. The rotation of the blade is sensed with the help of LDR and laser arrangement. The pulse from the LDR is compared with a comparator and fed to the counter. The pulse is then displayed in the seven segment display.

For the calibration of the anemometer a calibrator is designed. An induction motor is fixed on the base vertically with rectangular frames support. A hollow pipe is fixed to the shaft of the motor which acts as the arm. The anemometer is fixed at one end of the arm and at the other end a counter balance is kept so as to balance the weight at the other end. The force of wind experienced by the blade of the anemometer depends on the speed of the motor. The speed of the motor is controlled with the help of a variac. As the motor rotates the arm coupled to the shaft of the motor also rotates. With the rotation of the arm the anemometer fixed at one end of the blade experiences the effect of wind on the blades. From the calculation the wind speed hitting the blade of the anemometer with respect to the speed of the motor can be found out. So with the help of the calibrator the anemometer is calibrated so as to determine the accurate speed of wind.
