Ongoing and Past Project Activities

List of a few research projects (on-going and completed) in Mini/Smart Grid:

  • Design and Development of Mini-Grid for Efficient use of Distributed Hydropower Systems (July 2010 – July 2013)

This is currently an on-going project with support from NORAD and SINTEF, Norway. This project was started with the idea of doing Research and Development (R&D) for designing mini-grid power systems, developing a small test model for it, piloting it and commercializing the design. Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (DoEEE), Centre for Excellence in Production and Transportation of Electrical Energy (CEPTE), of Kathmandu University (Institutional partner) and Krishna Grills and Engineering Works, KGEW (Industrial Partner) are the stake-holders of this project.

  • Smart Unit for Power Distribution (July 2010 – July 2011)

This project was concerned with the construction of a system which will monitor and control distribution of electricity. The data pertaining to this system (such as voltage and current generation) were transferred to a centralized server so that they could be accessed through internet. Also, an automatic controller would analyze the system and make necessary adjustments to maintain optimum distribution of generated power. The designed system would compare the generation with demand. If the supply could not meet demand, the system will cut a few loads according to its priority and supply power only to critical loads where supplying electricity is inevitable. Whereas, when there is surplus power, the system will connect some offline loads.

  • Design of Mini-Grid Power Systems (July 2009 – July 2010)

This project was conducted under the thesis support grant from Energy Sector Assistance Program (ESAP), Nepal. This project basically focused on design of low cost automatic synchronizer, performance test of an Induction Motor as Generator (IMAG) with various excitation capacitor configurations, lab fabrication of Induction Generator Controller (IGC), performance study of IGCs and mathematical modeling of Induction Motor as Generator (IMAG). The lab fabricated automatic synchronizer and IGC were inexpensive and easy to use.  Moreover the system was made from indigenous technology available and thus it can be considered to mostly be suitable for interconnection of mini-grids in developing countries like Nepal, Sri-Lanka, Namibia, Tunisia etc where cost effectiveness has a greater role to play.
